Restoration of the marine environment: why ratification of HNS Convention is a matter of urgency!
19th February 2020 @ 9:00 am - 10:30 am

The HNS Convention (Hazardous and Noxious Substances by Sea Convention) is an international convention adopted by the International Maritime Organization in 1996 to compensate for damages caused by spillage of hazardous and noxious substances during maritime transportation. In 2010, a second international conference adopted a protocol to the convention, known as 2010 HNS Protocol. The protocol was designed to overcome some implementation problems that had discouraged states from ratifying the original convention. States are being urged to ratify the 2010 Protocol.
ECSA and its international partners are strong supporters of the HNS Convention and have been urging its ratification.
This event will gather high level representatives from International and European regulators and stakeholders – the IMO, IOPC, the European Commission and industry representatives – in order to hear about the purpose and benefit of the Convention, how the convention will strengthen the international liability framework and the main reasons why the Member States are being encouraged to ratify or accede to the Convention as soon as possible. It will also serve as an opportunity to hear the experiences from States that have ratified and those that are still to ratify.
Join us at this event to engage directly with the shipping industry and other stakeholders and regulators on this important convention.
